The Challenge

This project aims to restore populations of the dusky grouper along the Alentejo coast — a key species currently under threat. Led by FCiências.ID, the initiative combines scientific research, aquaculture innovation, and ecosystem restoration to support the reintroduction of this species into its natural habitat. Viridia supports this work to help establish a viable, long-term model for marine species recovery in Portugal.

Keystone Species

Dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus)

What We’re Doing

The project follows a phased, science-based approach to species restoration. Phase 1 involves captive breeding of dusky groupers at the Olhão Pilot Fish Farming Station (EPPO-IPMA).

Establishment and reinforcement of captive breeding populations at EPPO-IPMA
Controlled reproduction trials under scientific supervision
Transition from captive conditions to natural feeding behaviours
Use of floating cages in the Port of Sines to prepare individuals for release

Why It Matters

The dusky grouper is a key predator in coastal ecosystems, playing an essential role in maintaining ecological balance. Its decline reflects broader pressures on marine environments. By supporting its recovery, this project contributes to the restoration of marine biodiversity and the long-term health of Portugal's coastal ecosystems.
